Football Academy Cup

On Friday 13th April the first annual Football Academy Cup was held at the NMMU George campus.  8 local primary schools attended the tournament which was held between 3pm and 6pm.  The aim of the Cup will be to provide competitive opportunities for the primary schools and also enable the Sports Academy to select talented kids for the next years new intake of football players.  The final was hard fought with Tylora Primary School from Thembalethu eventually coming out the winners.  The runners up Thembalethu primary school received 4 new footballs as their prize and the winners received footballs along with a new football kit for their school.  The day was very successful with the schools commenting that they would love to hold it every month!

On 26th April we will be holding the Netball Academy Cup we hope this day will be just as successful.

Love and Life Skills Course comes to an end

At the end of March the 10 week Love and Life Skills programme came to an end. During this programme we aimed to empower 20 of our Sports Academy students to make good choices about sex, relationships and everything in-between. The programme was very successful with many good conversations being had between the leaders, Hannah, Rory and Suzi and the students. To celebrate the students completing the programme a dinner was held with the young people, here are a few photos from the night, for more head over to our facebook page.

Shankill Team

After 2 weeks of volunteering with us we were very sad to say goodbye to the Shankill Team from Belfast, Northern Ireland.  The team was made up of 10 young people from a community service project called the Shankill Area Project.  They worked extensively with the people in the Blanco township of George, touching the lives of so many people as well as impacting their own lives at the same time!  It was really a joy to have you all with us and we hope it won’t be long before we meet again!

Watch this video highlighting just a few experiences that the team had when they were here.

Bethel Team

We welcomed a team from the Bethel Church in Redding California, for a week in March. This team was incredible and really touched the lives of everyone they met. They held 11 church services whilst they were here, at Patria Church in the city centre of George as well as a church in the Thembalethu township. All the services were attended my people from all denominations and walks of life and the response was overwhelmingly positive. We thank them for choosing George as their destination and hope that we will see them again soon!

OAM Sports Academy Update

Netball:

We had an exciting day on Saturday with 6 of our OAM Sports Academy Netball girls attending U21 South Western District trials. They all played very well, with Andisiwe and Thandie being selected on the squad. We are now just waiting to hear if they will be selected for the team, so please keep them in your prayers as this would be an amazing opportunity for the girls!
